Clinically Validated Foundation Model Enhances Lung Pathology Interpretation

Researchers have developed PulmoFoundation, a clinically validated foundation model for comprehensive lung pathology interpretation. Built on Virchow2 and trained on approximately 40,000 diagnostic whole-slide images, the model was evaluated on over 26,000 WSIs across 32 tasks. In a prospective study involving 1,357 patients, PulmoFoundation achieved an average AUC of 92.3% and demonstrated significant potential to reduce the need for second reviews and defer IHC stain orders. A randomized controlled trial with eight pathologists showed that AI assistance from PulmoFoundation improved diagnostic accuracy, reduced diagnostic time, and enhanced inter-rater agreement. AI

IMPACT This model's clinical validation and demonstrated improvements in accuracy and efficiency could significantly impact diagnostic workflows in lung pathology.
