Google's Perch 2.0 AI model excels at recognizing whale calls using bird training

By PulseAugur Editorial · [1 sources] ·

Google DeepMind has developed Perch 2.0, an AI audio model initially trained on millions of bird recordings, which has shown surprising effectiveness in recognizing whale vocalizations. Researchers utilized transfer learning, applying the model's knowledge from avian calls to underwater sounds, thereby saving computational resources. This approach proved to be highly competitive, performing as the best or second-best model when evaluated against specialized whale bioacoustics models and other animal sound classifiers. AI
