Open-source surgical vision encoders developed via continual pretraining

Researchers have developed InnerLogic-Surg, a new family of open-source surgical vision encoders designed to improve AI analysis of surgical images. These models are created by continually pretraining a transformer-based image encoder on millions of surgical images from over 11,000 videos, covering diverse procedures and approximately 2,900 hours of footage. The largest InnerLogic-Surg model demonstrated superior performance across 20 different surgical tasks, including workflow recognition, instrument detection, and anatomy segmentation, indicating that surgical-specific pretraining leads to more transferable and generalizable representations compared to traditional methods. AI

IMPACT Enhances AI capabilities in surgical image analysis, potentially improving diagnostic accuracy and surgical planning.

InnerLogic-Surg: An Open Surgical Foundation Model via Continual Pretraining

arXiv:2611.07883v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Vision foundation models are the backbone of modern surgical image analysis, yet most surgical systems still rely on encoders pretrained on natural images or on specialist models trained from scratch on comparatively small dataset…
