AI framework fuses histology and clinical data for IBD remission prediction

Researchers have developed a modular framework for multimodal AI fusion, combining whole-slide histology images with clinical data to predict outcomes in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This framework allows for the interchangeable testing of 15 different fusion methods. In a prospective cohort of newly diagnosed IBD patients, the best-performing fusion method achieved a macro-F1 score of 0.57-0.75, outperforming single-modality models in four out of six scenarios and varying in its reliance on image data depending on the remission type. IMPACT This research could lead to more accurate and personalized treatment strategies for inflammatory bowel disease by leveraging multimodal AI.
