New benchmark tests AI's ability to digitize historical math diagrams

A new benchmark called HistGramBench has been developed to evaluate how well AI models can convert historical mathematical diagrams into searchable formats. The benchmark consists of 2,507 diagrams from books printed between 1551 and 1933. Researchers found that the best AI models could recover about three-fifths of the structural facts from these diagrams, with parallel lines and tangencies proving the most challenging relationships to reproduce accurately. AI

IMPACT This benchmark could improve the searchability and accessibility of historical mathematical texts for researchers and librarians.

HistGramBench: Measuring Structural Recovery When Multimodal Models Redraw Historical Mathematical Diagrams as TikZ

arXiv:2611.00081v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Digital libraries preserve mathematical books printed from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, but the lettered diagrams in them, the figures on which Euclidean proofs depend, remain scanned images whose content cannot be sear…
