New RL Framework $\pi$-StepNFT Boosts Embodied Control Performance

Researchers have introduced $\pi$-StepNFT, a novel online reinforcement learning framework designed to improve the performance of flow-based vision-language-action (VLA) models in embodied control tasks. This new framework addresses the challenge of multi-step denoising in VLA models by coupling wider stochastic exploration with finer step-wise supervision, without needing to compute the final-action likelihood. Experiments on the LIBERO benchmark showed a significant increase in average success rates, from 57.6% to 92.0% for $\pi_0$ and from 77.1% to 94.0% for $\pi_{0.5}$. Furthermore, $\pi$-StepNFT achieved the highest reported mean success among evaluated RL baselines on the ManiSkill dataset under visual perturbations. AI

IMPACT Enhances embodied control capabilities for robots and agents by improving performance on complex tasks.

$\pi$-StepNFT: Wider Space Needs Finer Steps in Online RL for Flow-based VLAs

arXiv:2603.02083v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Flow-based vision-language-action (VLA) models have emerged as a powerful paradigm for embodied control, but multi-step denoising makes policy-gradient online reinforcement learning (RL) difficult because the final-action …
