New framework verifies LLM planning limits in sliding puzzles

Researchers have developed a new framework to quantitatively assess the innate planning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) when they are not aided by external tools or feedback. This framework, called SPE (Success-Weighted Plan Efficiency), decomposes planning success into execution reliability, coordination among legal plans, and action economy. By evaluating thousands of LLM outputs on sliding puzzles, the study found that even models capable of completing every trial become less economical at longer planning horizons, and that high efficiency in completed plans can coexist with poor overall goal attainment. This method provides a verifiable way to measure the limitations of unaided LLM planning. AI

IMPACT Provides a verifiable method to quantify the inherent planning limitations of LLMs, crucial for developing more capable AI agents.

Verifiable Efficiency Limits of Innate LLM Planning in Sliding Puzzles

arXiv:2610.36415v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Tool-assisted planning success can reflect external search and verification, leaving a model's unaided planning ability unresolved. We isolate innate planning through complete plans generated in one response without tools or executi…
