New RoAR Method Enhances LLM Reasoning by Penalizing Spurious Logic

Researchers have developed a new method called RoAR (Rollout-Agreement Reward) to improve the reasoning capabilities of language models trained with Group-Based Policy Optimization (GRPO). By analyzing the agreement among correct-answer traces, RoAR identifies and penalizes spurious reasoning, such as internal inconsistencies or misuse of problem conditions. In evaluations on five mathematical reasoning benchmarks, a 1.5B GRPO-RoAR model achieved a 55.5% mean pass@1 rate with only 7K training examples, outperforming existing GRPO methods by over 5 percentage points. A subsequent audit confirmed RoAR's lower spurious reasoning rate compared to other models. AI

Improving Reasoning with Rollout Agreement for Group-Based Policy Optimization

arXiv:2610.34951v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Recent methods for Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) use rollout diversity to improve reasoning performance or training efficiency. Despite these gains, the extent to which differences among correct-answer roll…
