Decision models show promise for faster, cheaper entity matching than LLMs

Researchers have explored decision models as a novel approach to entity matching, offering an alternative to traditional fine-tuned language models and slower generative LLMs. In a zero-shot setting across eight benchmarks, the top decision models achieved performance comparable to GPT-6 Luna, with one model even surpassing it. These decision models also demonstrated faster processing times and lower costs compared to GPT-6 Luna, with several showing well-calibrated match probabilities without task-specific recalibration. A cascade system that routes uncertain pairs to an ensemble of generative LLMs further improved performance, with the best decision model surpassing existing literature benchmarks on four out of eight tasks. IMPACT Decision models offer a potentially faster and more cost-effective alternative for entity matching tasks compared to current LLMs.

    Entity Matching using Decision Models

arXiv:2610.34626v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Entity matching is the task of deciding whether two records describe the same real-world entity. Current entity matching methods rely on pre-trained language models (PLMs) which require task specific fine-tuning or generative larg…
