New SCI-AGENT-EXAM benchmark reveals performance gaps in LLM agents for scientific research

A new benchmark called SCI-AGENT-EXAM has been developed to systematically evaluate the capabilities of large language model (LLM) agents in scientific research workflows. This benchmark includes 120 tasks across 11 scientific fields and 7 research task types, requiring both executable code and textual outputs. Experiments using 10 frontier LLM agents showed that GPT-6 Astra achieved the highest score at 80.9%, but with only 26% of its runs meeting a 0.95 success threshold, highlighting significant performance gaps and variations in execution efficiency. AI

IMPACT This benchmark will enable more rigorous evaluation of LLM agents' ability to perform complex scientific tasks, potentially accelerating the development of more capable AI research assistants.
