New VERITAS method verbalizes AI computation to detect reasoning errors

Researchers have developed VERITAS, a novel method for detecting unfaithfulness in Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning by verbalizing a model's internal computation. Unlike existing methods that analyze outputs or static activations, VERITAS uses layer-wise Jacobian projection to trace the evolution of reasoning at each generated token. This approach provides a more interpretable understanding of how and where reasoning errors occur. Experiments on four datasets demonstrated that VERITAS significantly outperforms LLM-as-a-Judge and activation probing methods, achieving a 28.4% gain in balanced accuracy. AI

IMPACT Provides a more mechanistic understanding of AI reasoning failures, potentially improving model reliability and interpretability.

Verbalising Model's Computation for Chain-of-Thought Faithfulness Detection

arXiv:2610.23275v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Current Chain-of-Thought (CoT) verification methods detect reasoning faithfulness from model outputs or static activations, but are limited in explaining how unfaithfulness develops during generation. We introduce VERITAS to verbali…
