New benchmark reveals AI research agents lack scientific judgment

A new benchmark called Sci$\Pi$vot has been developed to evaluate the scientific judgment capabilities of AI research agents. The benchmark consists of 248 cases derived from real-world research scenarios where senior researchers intervened to correct AI agents' decisions. Frontier AI models, even when provided with project context and a human-corrected alternative, performed below chance on these cases, with the highest accuracy achieved by models being 63.5%, compared to 73.4% for human researchers. Notably, models performed worse when given access to the project record, and reconsideration did not consistently improve their accuracy. AI

IMPACT Highlights a critical gap in current AI research agents, indicating a need for improved scientific reasoning and judgment capabilities.

Sci$\Pi$vot: Benchmarking Principal-Investigator Judgment at Pivotal Moments of Scientific AutoResearch Agents

arXiv:2610.21082v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language model (LLM) agents can keep scientific experiments running for months with little human supervision, but reliable autonomous research also requires scientific judgment. Evaluating scientific judgment is difficult beca…
