RingNav visual heading estimator debuts for tiny robots

Researchers have developed RingNav, a novel visual heading estimator designed for tiny robots with limited computational resources. This model constrains its memory to a circular manifold (S^1), learning only the turn between consecutive images to estimate heading. In tests on the TartanAir Visual SLAM Challenge, RingNav demonstrated a 27% reduction in mean absolute turn error and a 15% decrease in accumulated heading error over 4 seconds compared to a similarly sized learned-memory model. The system is capable of running at 27.3Hz on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W and can achieve 33.4Hz on an ultra-low power GAP8 processor. AI

IMPACT This development could enable more capable navigation in resource-constrained robotic systems.

RingNav: Task-Shaped Circular Memory for Visual Heading

arXiv:2610.19044v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Tiny robots have limited computation and memory, yet visual navigation systems often maintain more state than a task requires. We ask whether persistent memory can instead be shaped by the task. We present \textbf{RingNav}, a \(10…
