New framework models threats to graph-based LLM question-answering systems

Researchers have developed GraphRAG-LTM, a new framework for modeling threats against graph retrieval-augmented generation (GraphRAG) systems. This framework tests attacks at three nested levels: BB Query, which uses ranking feedback to alter queries and reduce relevant seed chunks; WB Query, which employs retriever gradients for the same purpose; and Graph-aware WB, which deletes bridge triplets from the evidence graph to disrupt multi-hop reasoning. Experiments demonstrated that these attacks, even with limited access, can degrade answer quality and impair fact retrieval by targeting both seed chunks and the assembled knowledge graph. AI

IMPACT This research could lead to more robust and secure graph-based LLM systems by identifying and mitigating potential attack vectors.

GraphRAG-LTM: A Layered Threat Modeling Framework for Attacks on Graph Retrieval-Augmented Generation

arXiv:2610.19549v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Graph retrieval-augmented generation (GraphRAG) uses document-derived knowledge graphs to assemble evidence for large language model (LLM) answers. Its security depends on both the seed chunks retrieved for a query and the graph evi…
