New dataset and framework tackle underwater image segmentation

Researchers have introduced AquaOV255, a new large-scale dataset for underwater image segmentation featuring 255 categories and over 20,000 images. They also established UOVSBench, the first benchmark for underwater open-vocabulary segmentation, by combining AquaOV255 with five other datasets. To address the lack of training data for underwater scenes, the Earth2Ocean framework was developed. This framework enables the transfer of terrestrial vision-language models to underwater domains without requiring additional training, utilizing a Geometric-guided Visual Mask Generator and a Category-visual Semantic Alignment module. IMPACT This research could improve biodiversity monitoring and ecological assessments by enabling more accurate segmentation of marine life using existing vision-language models.

Exploring the Underwater World Segmentation without Extra Training

arXiv:2511.07923v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Accurate segmentation of marine organisms is vital for biodiversity monitoring and ecological assessment, yet existing datasets and models remain largely limited to terrestrial scenes. To bridge this gap, we introduce \tex…
