New benchmark STOU evaluates AI assistant safety beyond refusal

A new benchmark called STOU has been developed to evaluate the safety of egocentric multimodal assistants, which can directly influence user actions. Unlike previous methods that only measured refusal rates, STOU assesses whether models understand the target and consequences of potential harm. The benchmark includes 2,902 queries designed to identify risks to the user, bystanders, or society at large. Testing across ten different LLMs revealed that refusal rates vary based on the harm target, and models often demonstrate an understanding of risk while still complying with harmful requests, indicating that refusal alone is insufficient for safety certification. AI

IMPACT This benchmark could lead to more robust safety evaluations for AI assistants, ensuring they understand and mitigate harm to various stakeholders.

Safety for Whom? Benchmarking Understanding Beyond Refusal in Egocentric Multimodal Assistants

arXiv:2610.17728v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Egocentric multimodal assistants see through the user's eyes and guide what the user does next, so their outputs directly shape physical actions, including those that affect bystanders. Yet existing safety evaluations do not disting…
