LLMs unlock odor perception by mapping molecular mixtures to human descriptors

Researchers have developed a method to understand odor perception by using large language models (LLMs) to derive perceptual descriptions from complex natural odor mixtures. This approach, applied to over 1,200 food mixtures, demonstrated that LLM-generated descriptions can effectively predict how similar these mixtures are perceived to be, even outperforming traditional component-overlap metrics. The learned molecular embeddings also showed alignment with human-defined odor descriptors, suggesting LLMs can provide scalable supervision for deciphering the relationship between chemical composition and sensory experience. IMPACT LLMs are being applied to novel scientific domains, potentially accelerating research in fields like chemistry and sensory science.

Learning Perceptual Geometry of Natural Odor Mixtures from LLM-Derived Descriptors

arXiv:2610.17164v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The relationship between odor chemistry and perception remains incompletely understood. Many existing studies focus on the perception of single molecules, whereas natural odors contain tens to hundreds of components, adding extra la…
