New AI framework uses audio and depth for robot navigation in dark industrial settings

Researchers have introduced ADAPT, a new framework for robots navigating industrial environments without visible light, utilizing spatial audio for target localization and depth sensors for obstacle awareness. To facilitate this, they developed DarkNav-Bench, a benchmark comprising 24 industrial scenes with varying acoustic conditions. ADAPT incorporates a novel reinforcement learning technique called transition-aware reward shaping (TARS), which optimizes navigation by considering feasible movements and rotations. In experiments, ADAPT demonstrated superior performance compared to existing navigation baselines, achieving a 90.6% success rate in clean acoustic conditions and 60.0% in challenging noisy environments. ADAPT: Audio-Depth Action Planning with Transition-Aware Rewards for Lights-Out Industrial Navigation

arXiv:2610.15956v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Vision-language-action models for embodied navigation typically rely on RGB observations, limiting their applicability in lights-out industrial environments where visible illumination may be unavailable. We study illumination-indepe…
