New BLiMPPI benchmark tests multilingual NPI understanding in LLMs

Researchers have introduced BLiMPPI, a new multilingual benchmark designed to evaluate language models' understanding of Negative Polarity Items (NPIs). This suite contains over 12,000 minimal pairs across 33 languages, constructed by identifying NPIs in Universal Dependencies treebanks and perturbing them. Evaluations of 12 multilingual and 2 monolingual models revealed that performance degrades with lower-resource languages and when NPIs are not solvable by n-gram analysis. AI

IMPACT This benchmark could reveal limitations in multilingual LLMs' grasp of nuanced linguistic phenomena, potentially guiding future model development for better cross-lingual understanding.

BLiMPPI: Benchmark of Linguistic Minimal Pairs for Polarity Items

arXiv:2610.13607v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Negative polarity items (NPIs), such as "anymore" and "ever", are grammatical only in select environments, predominantly in the context of negation. Because their grammaticality depends on both syntax and semantics, they have a rich…
