New AI planner enhances 3D ship reconstruction at sea

Researchers have developed DA-NBV, a novel direction-aware next-best-view planning policy designed to improve the efficiency and completeness of 3D reconstructions for ships at sea. This new approach augments traditional occupancy modeling with directional observation statistics, utilizing a learnable Position Advantage Field (PAF) to guide viewpoint selection. DA-NBV also incorporates a locally constrained action space and a nonlinear coverage-shaping reward to enhance scanning efficiency, particularly in challenging maritime conditions with wave-induced motion and wind disturbances. Experiments demonstrate that DA-NBV leads to more complete reconstructions and reduced Chamfer distance, while also improving path efficiency. AI

IMPACT This research could lead to more efficient and accurate 3D modeling of maritime assets, impacting fields like autonomous operations and damage assessment.
