Socratic AI tutors boost long-term LLM learning in students

A study in a graduate-level mobile robotics course investigated the impact of two types of AI tutors on students' learning and LLM usage. The Socratic-Guidance (SG) tutor, which uses dialogic questioning, and the Prompt-Refinement (PR) tutor, which guides prompt formulation, were compared. While both tutors led to similar task performance during the intervention, students using the SG tutor showed greater learning gains and adopted more understanding-driven prompting strategies when later using an unconstrained LLM.
