New AI model MIThinker enhances motivational interviewing counseling

Researchers have developed MIThinker, a novel thinking model designed to enhance the effectiveness of AI agents in motivational interviewing counseling. This lightweight model generates therapeutic thoughts to guide strategy selection and response generation, addressing a gap where existing LLM counselors lack explicit alignment with counseling techniques. To overcome the scarcity of annotated thought data, an automated pipeline called AugR1-MI was created to infer counselor thoughts from observed responses. Evaluations indicate that an agent utilizing MIThinker, named MindfulMI, achieves comparable MI competency to state-of-the-art systems while requiring significantly less computational resources. AI

IMPACT This research could lead to more effective and computationally efficient AI-powered mental health support tools.

MIThinker: A Plug-and-Play Policy-Optimized Thinker For Motivational Interviewing Counseling

arXiv:2606.29265v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Reasoning large language models (LLMs) have recently made much progress in complex problem-solving, leveraging internal reasoning (or thought) to guide their solution generation. However, existing LLM-based counseling agents, includ…
