New SpeechEQ benchmark evaluates emotional intelligence in voice AI

Researchers have introduced SpeechEQ, a new framework designed to benchmark the emotional intelligence of voice conversational models. This framework includes a dataset of 2,265 dialogues across 15 Emotional Quotient (EQ) subscales, inspired by the EQ-i 2.0 theory, and a multi-turn evaluation protocol that yields a Spoken EQ (SEQ) score. Experiments using SpeechEQ revealed that current Speech-Language Models (SLMs) struggle with paralinguistic cues, exhibiting limitations such as modality shortcuts, safety traps, and contextual amnesia, which hinder their ability to achieve true emotional awareness. IMPACT This benchmark could drive improvements in AI's ability to understand and respond to human emotion in spoken conversations.
