Beyond Humans: Multispecies Animal Face Recognition Using Transfer Learning
Researchers have developed a method for multispecies animal face recognition using transfer learning, adapting models trained on human faces and general object recognition for animal identification. The study compared FaceNet and Vision Transformer (ViT) on datasets of dogs, primates, and cattle, finding ViT achieved high accuracy for dogs. While results for primates were encouraging, they varied by species and task, and did not consistently surpass existing methods.
