Everyone’s Talking VPPs—No One’s Talking Trust
The next phase of the energy transition involves virtual power plants (VPPs) that aggregate distributed energy resources like batteries and EVs. However, the scaling of VPPs is hindered by a lack of trust in device authenticity, command authorization, and data verification. Current security measures focus on network connections rather than securing intent, leading to high integration costs and fragmented value chains. A standardized trust fabric, enforcing security at the message level with cryptographic identity and policy-driven authorization, is needed to evolve VPPs into reliable grid infrastructure. AI
IMPACT Virtual power plants require a trust layer to scale, impacting the integration and reliability of distributed energy resources.
