Decoding Insect Song: A Multitask Semisupervised Orthoptera Bioacoustic Classifier
Researchers have developed PULSE, a novel semi-supervised, multi-task framework designed to improve the classification of Orthoptera bioacoustics. This system combines weakly-supervised species classification with self-supervised learning on unlabeled audio data and knowledge distillation from a general bioacoustic model. The PULSE framework significantly outperforms existing general models in accuracy metrics and its learned embeddings can encode ecologically meaningful structures, aiding ecological discovery through visualization tools.
