Tech giants back new data center climate initiative
Major tech companies including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are partnering with the nonprofit Elemental Impact to launch a new initiative focused on developing and testing climate-friendly technologies within data centers. This effort aims to leverage the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure as a proving ground for innovations in areas such as advanced cooling, energy storage, and low-carbon materials, rather than solely as a source of increased emissions. Elemental Impact plans to invest between $500,000 and $5 million in up to 10 startups through 2027 to facilitate these pilot projects, with additional philanthropic backing from organizations like Breakthrough Energy and Builders Vision Philanthropy.
