Insurance as Coordination Technology: Closing East Africa's Structural Gap with AI
The author has developed two open-source AI tools, bima-mcp and kilimo-bima, to address the low insurance penetration in East Africa, particularly Kenya. These tools leverage AI to overcome traditional barriers in insurance distribution, claims verification, and actuarial data collection. Kilimo-bima, a Swahili-first app, calculates parametric crop insurance premiums based on historical drought data, while bima-mcp provides an MCP server for insurance intelligence, enabling automatic payouts via M-PESA for parametric policies.
