Chinese team builds first commercial ‘3-lane highway’ in optical fibre to boost capacity
A Chinese research team has activated the world's first commercial three-band optical fiber communication system, effectively creating a "3-lane highway" for data. This new technology significantly increases the carrying capacity of existing fiber optic infrastructure, potentially more than five times that of conventional systems. The system integrates the S, C, and L bands, overcoming previous technical challenges to enable greater data transmission for future networks, including those supporting AI. AI
IMPACT This advancement in optical fiber capacity could accelerate the development and deployment of large-scale AI networks by providing more efficient data transmission.
